​Giovanni Testori e la famiglia Carutti

Giovanni Testori è stato uno dei maggiori intellettuali italiani del secondo Novecento. La sua era una famiglia di imprenditori tessili con la quale ha sempre mantenuto un forte legame pur avendo scelto di intraprendere fin da ragazzo un’altra strada. Negli anni giovanili aveva stretto una grande amicizia con Carlo Alberto Carutti, che avrebbe poi sposato Maria Luisa, una delle sorelle dello scrittore. Carlo Alberto e Maria Luisa sono il papà e la mamma di Efisio: il legame, tra la famiglia di Efisio e Giovanni Testori è continuato nel tempo e ha segnato significativamente le rispettive storie nella condivisione di tante passioni comuni.
Come scrittore, Testori nei suoi libri ha dato spesso rappresentazione di un mondo sul cui sfondo c’è la realtà delle industrie lombarde: i suoi romanzi scritti tra gli anni ’50 e gli anni ’60 e raccolti nel ciclo I segreti di Milano ”raccontano epopea e contraddizioni del boom economico italiano."
Sono stati tradotti in più lingue. Da questi libri è stato tratto il soggetto per uno dei capolavori del cinema italiano, “Rocco e i suoi fratelli” con la regia di Luchino Visconti e Alain Delon come protagonista. Un testo teatrale di Testori L’Arialda, portato in scena sempre da Visconti, era stato al centro di un caso nazionale a causa del sequestro dello spettacolo e del libro. Un altro famoso film di Visconti, Ludwig era stato girato nel castello di Linderhof, a Fussen, dove ha sede di un’importante azienda, la Bihler, con la quale Carlo Alberto Carutti cominciò a lavorare agli inizi degli anni ’50.

Un rapporto importante, tanto che Carutti era stato anche nominato cittadino onorario. Giovanni Testori oltre che letterato è stato un importante storico dell’arte, allievo del grande Roberto Longhi. A lui si devono studi che hanno portato alla riscoperta di grandi protagonisti dell’arte lombarda dal ‘500 al ‘700. Ma i suoi interessi si sono allargati anche ad altre stagioni e ad altre scuole: è stato un grande conoscitore della pittura dell’800 francese, in particolare di Géricault e di Gustave Courbet, pittori al centro anche della sua passione collezionistica.
A partire dal 1975 Testori è diventato una delle firme più importanti del Corriere della Sera, il maggiore quotidiano italiano. I suoi commenti sull’attualità e su fatti di cronaca hanno spesso suscitato appassionati dibattiti. Sulle pagine del Corriere Testori ha anche svolto un’intensa attività come critico, portando alla ribalta artisti destinati ad affermarsi in breve tempo sulla scena europea. La sua attenzione si era rivolta negli anni ’80 al mondo tedesco e in particolare alla scuola dei Neuen Wilden berlinesi, per i quali ha organizzato numerose mostre in Germania come in Italia.
La sua passione per la pittura per tanti anni lo ha portato ad un’attività artistica, con mostre di sue opere sia a Milano che a Torino e a Roma. Il ciclo più iconico della sua produzione aveva come soggetto i pugili, con tele di grandi dimensioni cariche di materia. Il “Pugile” esposto in occasione di questa festa fa parte di quel ciclo ed era parte della Collezione Carutti: la famiglia lo ha donato all’Associazione Giovanni Testori, che oggi gestisce l’eredità e la casa dello scrittore.
Il patrimonio di Giovanni Testori è custodito nella casa di famiglia a Novate Milanese, che sorge vicina all’azienda.
Insieme ai manoscritti, ai quadri e ai disegni c’è anche la sua importante biblioteca d’arte, grazie alla quale oggi la casa è diventata un attivo centro studi.
La casa è anche un hub culturale aperto al territorio del Nord Milano, con attività destinate alle scuole e con una proposta espositiva destinata in particolare a giovani artisti.

Giovanni Testori and the Carutti family
​
Giovanni Testori was one of the leading Italian intellectuals of the later 20th century. He came from a family of textile entrepreneurs with whom he always maintained strong links, even though he chose to follow a different path while still a boy. In his earlier years, he formed a close friendship with Carlo Alberto Carutti, who later married one of the writer’s sisters, Maria Luisa. Carlo Alberto and Maria Luisa are Efisio’s father and mother: the close relationship between Efisio’s and Giovanni Testori’s families continued over the years and has notably influenced their respective
stories through the sharing of many common enthusiasms.
As a writer, Testori’s books often unfold with the world of industrial Lombardy as a backdrop. His novels written in the 1950s and 60s, gathered into a cycle called I Segreti di Milano (The Secrets of Milan), relate sagas and contradictions of the Italian economic boom. They have been translated into many languages. These books also inspired one of the masterpieces of Italian cinema, Rocco e i suoi fratelli (Rocco and his brothers), directed by Luchino Visconti and with Alain Delon in the principal role. A theatrical work by Testori, “L’Arialda”, also staged by Visconti, hit the national
headlines with the seizure of the show and the book. Another famous film by Visconti, Ludwig, was partly shot in LinderhofPalace, the seat of an important company, Bihler, in which Carlo Alberto Carutti began to work at the beginning of the 1950s. An important relationship, for which Carutti later received honorary citizenship.
As well as a man of letters, Giovanni Testori was also a major art historian, a pupil of the great Roberto Longhi. We are indebted to him for studies that led to the rediscovery of leading players in Lombard art from the 16th to the 18th century.
But his interests also extended to other periods and schools. He had a profound knowledge of 19th century French painting, in particular that of Géricault and Courbet, who were also central to his enthusiasms as a collector.
From 1975, Testori became one of the most important contributors to the Corriere della Sera, the leading Italian newspaper.
His comments on current affairs and news items often aroused heated debates. He was also highly active as a critic for the same paper, drawing attention to artists who would soon achieve a European reputation. He paid especial attention, during the 1980s, to the Neuen Wilden school of Berlin, for which he organized numerous exhibitions both in
Germany and in Italy.
For many years, Testori’s passion for the visual arts led him to take up painting himself, with exhibitions in Turin and Rome as well as in Milan. His most iconic cycle centred upon boxers, with large canvases displaying a wealth of material.
The “Boxer” exhibited at this festival is part of that cycle and was part of the Carutti Collection. The family has donated it to the Associazione Giovanni Testori, which today manages the writer’s estate and home.
Giovanni Testori’s heritage is held in the family home at Novate Milanese, close to the company. Together with manuscripts, paintings and drawings, it also contains his important art library, which has enabled the house to become an active study centre.
The house is also a cultural hub open to the territory of North Milan, with activities aimed at schools and a series of exhibitions dedicated particularly to young artists.
